Ellie’s Service

As promised – Zachariah was able to break it into three parts for me during spring break. So thankful for being able to share this with you all. The service was very meaningful for us and we were privileged that Ellie was able to share the promise of Heaven with our community. I hope that this will bless many. Charlotte

We so felt the warmth and love tonight as the community, our friends and family gathered to honor Ellie. outfit 2

What a testimony to God’s grace and love in our lives and in the life of our sweet little girl. She wore a beautiful gown that my dear friend had made for her. She also wore a new hat – especially created to go with her lovely gown.

I am so thankful to all of you who came out to share your love and support for us this weekend and also for all of you who prayed for us today, because you knew how difficult it would be.

Ellie was a beautiful princess tonight. Although I know that she is at home with the Lord, it was still sweet to see that beautiful outer shell that held her sweet spirit.

And it was a blessing to me personally to share her with so many of you who I love so dearly that didn’t get to see her in person while she was here on this earth.

And then at the end, when everyone left and Zachariah and Brittany took the children for us and my mother-in-law and brother-in-law went to car…

Chris and I stood alone in front of the casket and wept for the little girl we have come to cherish and love so much. It tore our hearts out to leave her. How can we walk away? But it would have been worse to never had the chance to know her at all. It would have been worse to not have been able to take the first step.

We are thankful to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, that He made it possible for us to have Ellie. Because our lives were completely changed in Him 14 years ago, we were able to welcome Ellie and trust Him day by day with her.

I pray that the Lord will help each of us to cherish our roles as the protectors of children – men and women who value and cherish life. Please pray for us as we approach the funeral services on Monday and the burial of our precious girl.

And He called a child to Himself and set him before them,  and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me;  but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. Matthew 18:2-6

Ellie Louise Cushman

obit 2Ellie Louise Cushman of Port Royal, SC was born September 19, 2012.  She weighed 4 lbs 7 oz and was born at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. Our precious daughter passed away from this life into the arms of the Lord Jesus on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at our home.

Ellie is survived by parents, Chris and Charlotte Cushman, seven siblings,  Zachariah, Brooke, Talley, Brant-Fowler, Hart, Susan and Taggart Cushman as well as extended family.

We invite our friends, family and community to join us for Ellie’s viewing and services. The viewing will be held at Saul’s Funeral Home in Bluffton on Saturday, December 29, 2012 from 5 until 7pm.

Come celebrate her life with us on Monday, December 31st at 11:00 am at Community Bible Church of Beaufort. Burial will be held at the Beaufort National Cemetery at 12:00 pm.  We look forward to talking to you personally at a reception immediately following burial at the church in the Fellowship Hall.

The pneumonia Ellie had developed proved to be too much for her weakened immune system.  We are grateful to have been able to enjoy her on this earth and spend our Christmas together. We look forward to “flying away” to meet her one day ~ as she is whole and healed in heaven with our Savior.

Diagnosed with a serious chromosomal abnormality called Trisomy 18 in utero, Ellie was a precious reminder of God’s grace in many people’s lives.  Most babies diagnosed with this do not survive birth, and those who do are born with severe health problems, often involving malformations of the heart and other major organs. They may not be able to breathe without assistance, and they may require multiple surgeries before they can even leave the hospital. However, as more parents choose to keep these children, and as more medical professionals agree to treat these little patients, we are seeing more and more children surviving and thriving in spite of serious medical disabilities.

Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip – He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you – the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm – He will watch over your life. The Lord will watch over your coming and going now and forever more.

Instead of flowers, we would be honored if you would donate to the Ronald McDonald House of Charleston ~ 81 Gadsden Street, Charleston, SC  29401. Or please help fund research and education about Trisomy 18 at the Support Organization For Trisomy 18 (SOFT) at trisomy.org.

Our friends Martin and Diane Sauls of Sauls Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements http://www.saulsfh.com/.

Our sweet Ellie passed away from this life into the arms of the Lord Jesus Wednesday afternoon.

The pneumonia she had developed proved to be too much for her weakened immune system.  We are grateful to have been able to enjoy her on this earth and spend our Christmas together. We look forward to “flying away” to meet her one day ~ as she is whole and healed in heaven.

We will be meeting with the funeral home tomorrow to discuss arrangements and will announce them here as soon as they are finalized.

We are thankful for the support and love that each of you has shown to our family as we have walked through this over the past three months. Our grief is real, but so is our joy in having such a blessing in Ellie.

I will be sure to post more details as soon as I can.

Love to each of you~

Update Wednesday

12-26-12 1 retouchWe were at the pediatricians office first thing this morning to figure out how to proceed with Ellie.

She has pneumonia, likely caused by her weakened immune system. We have new, stronger antibiotics now that will hopefully knock out this infection.

We had an apnea episode last night, but were able to get her re-situated.

She is so small and fragile – we covet your prayers for her health and well-being.

Please pray…..

  • That this new antibiotic will do the trick and that her temp would come down within 48 hours.
  • That her lungs would be completely clear.
  • That she would not lose anymore weight.
  • That she would not have any more apnea episodes.
  • For good health for our family.

Thank you so much for your kind encouragement and prayers.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas from the cushmans

Ellie is doing so well this early Christmas Morning.

So thankful for God’s grace and mercy on us this holiday.

She is still very congested and is still running a temperature, but she is resting comfortably and looks really good.

Please pray for her to get completely cleared up from this illness and also for her to able to start gaining weight again.

The Lord be praised we have not had any apnea episodes at all since yesterday morning at 4 am.

THANK YOU for praying.

Merry Christmas!

Afternoon Update 12-24-12 Christmas Eve

Latest news from Ellieville – 12-24-12 1

We are thanking the Lord that Ellie has not had any apnea episodes since this morning. Her wonderful hospice nurse Lynn came to see her and confirmed that she does now have something going on in her lungs.
Our pediatrician has given us a nebulizer to use and we are alternating breathing treatments, feedings and oxygen. She is also on antibiotics for the possible infection, and continues to run a temp which we are controlling via Tylenol.
She looks great and is comfortable, which we are so thankful for.
Medically our team doesn’t really know what to think of her, which I think is characteristic for kids with Trisomy 18. It is hard to pin down the why of what is going on with them.
But I do know the “Who” that has been using our sweet little girl for His purposes and keeping her with us for right now and in this minute. I am so thankful for the Lord who has shown His grace and mercy in our lives once again.
Specific prayers –
  • For Ellie to live!
  • That Ellie would continue to breathe on her own, grow stronger and be able to increase her intake of food.
  • For her lungs to clear up completely and that we would not have to have her admitted to the hospital.
  • That the temperature was caused by an infection and not brain damage from lack of oxygen.
  • That any infection would be completely cured.
  • Teamwork in our home.
  • For our night to be smooth and very uneventful.
Thank you so much for your prayers. Praising God for each of you.

Joy comes in the morning

Psalm 30:1-5

I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up and have not let my foes rejoice over me.

O Lord my God, I cried to you for help,  and you have healed me.

O Lord, you have brought up my soul from Sheol;  you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit.

Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name.

For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime.

Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.

I had been watching the sweet baby sleep since one o’clock, occasionally dozing myself and then starting awake to see her little face. Her chest was moving up and down, up and down.

While I was watching, I saw her movements change, slow and stop.

“This is it,” I thought. The moment had come.

I woke Chris and said, “Here, come hold Ellie.”

He took her and sat in our rocking chair and we held her, crying and watching her last few feeble breaths. Watching her go completely still.

Her pulse was faint… almost nonexistent.

We quietly cried thinking our private thoughts…

Minute after minute seemed to pass.

Cough. Sputter. Cough.

Big eyes.

Old Ellie. Staring, looking and squeaking at us.

Um… could you folks feed me please?

12-24-12 - 2 Feed Me

Thank you Lord Jesus.

I don’t know what today will hold. But I am thankful for a 4 am reprieve. Another outfit change.

Another chance to feel her breathe in and out.

A wonderful way to start Christmas Eve Day.

Love to you all… will keep you posted.

Ellie’s Late Night Update

12-23 me and ellie We had a tough afternoon but our night has been better.

Ellie had a temp of 101.6 so the nurse had us give her some Tylenol. They are unsure whether it is an infection or if  her brain cannot regulate her temp anymore.

Chris asked hospice if we could have oxygen and they brought some.

She really has perked up tonight with the oxygen and we have been successful in getting some feeds in.

Also her bowel movement issues seem to have stopped.

Praise be to the Lord for He has been answering our prayers … please keep praying!12-23 chris and ellie

Things to pray for –

  • For Ellie to continue to breathe on her own and initiate her own breaths.
  • That if she has an infection that she would be completely healed.
  • That she would get some good sleep tonight and that it would give her what she needs for tomorrow’s challenges.
  • That she  would get strong. That we would be able to get her back up to a full feeding.
  • For no lasting effects from the lack of oxygen that she has been experiencing.
  • That she would grow grow grow grow….
  • That the Lord would be gracious to all of us and let her stay with us. We love her so.

12-23 Brooke and ellieThank you to all of you who brought food, songs,  gifts and kind words. We so appreciate everyone’s kindness to our family.

Especially touched by those who have, out of their own grief, sacrificially shown their love us. You are truly Jesus’ hands and feet.

Praying throughout the night.

Do not withhold your mercy from me; O Lord; may your love and your truth always protect me. Psalm 40:11
