Homeschooling

This is the beginning of our twelth year of homeschooling. Our grades this year are 12th, 6th, 4th, 3rd & 1st.

Although I am not an expert, I am constantly learning and my prayer is for my children to become Christ-lovers who are prepared to follow Him and bring honor to His name in our world.

The thing I love most about homeschooling is that my children are here at home with me. My husband and I are their primary influence and they and we have relationships with each other.

Some of my favorite homeschooling books are: Homestyle Teaching (Dr. Raymond Moore), Teach Them Diligently (Lou Priolo), A Biblical Home Education (Ruth Beechick), The Organized Homeschooler (Vicki Caruana), Success in School (Vicki Caruana), The Three R’s (Ruth Beechick), The Well Trained Mind (Susan Wise Bauer) and When Children Love to Learn (Elaine Cooper).

I think all of these books have very valuable information. You will need to decide for yourself what works for you. I don’t use all of these methods, but I have learned a lot from all of these books. If you have specific questions email me at charlottecushman@gmail.com.

Since I live in South Carolina and am in charge of several local homeschooling blogs, people often ask me homeschooling questions. Here are some sites that have a lot of helpful information about homeschooling in South Carolina.

  1. Coastal Home Educators Conference - CHEC is a non-profit conference that seeks to encourage homeschool families by bringing nationally known speakers with practical, biblical counsel to the coastal SC & GA area.
  2. Homeschooling 101 - Homeschooling resources (under construction). A sister site to the CHEC site.
  3. Community Bible Church Christian Academy (CBCCA) – Our local homeschooling umbrella’s blog. A useful site for announcements and homeschooling info.
  4. CBCCA Resource Center - Companion site to CBCCA site. Other local resources.
  5. Carolina Homeschooler – Formed in 2004 to increase communication and support for South Carolina’s Third Option homeschoolers. Third Option homeschoolers are those who choose to register through an accountability association which operates under Section 59-65-47 (the third option) of the SC Code of Laws.
  6. HSDLA - A nonprofit advocacy organization established to defend and advance the constitutional right of parents to direct the education of their children and to protect family freedoms. Through annual memberships, HSLDA is tens of thousands of families united in service together, providing a strong voice when and where needed.
  7. South Carolina Academic Standards
