Top 10 things I have learned about homeschooling.

For continuing to keep up with me.

When I started blogging I thought that it would be primarily to bring wisdom to the masses and impart some things that have helped me as a homeschooler and as a mom.

That was a dumb idea.

Now I mostly just post pictures because I realize that I don’t really have anything definitive to say. I am a homeschool mom who does not know that I am doing a good job. I pray more now. I give advice much less. I was so sure of myself when I started this journey. Now I can only hang onto Jesus. What better place is there to be?

So here are the top 10 things I have learned in the past 10 years.

10. I don’t have anything figured out.

9. It gets harder the more you know that you don’t know.

8. I understand why teachers don’t want to teach their own children. They know what they are up against.

7. Praying is not optional.

6. I have to stay home.

5. Your kids don’t school themselves. You have to sit with them. Keep them on task. Keep yourself on task.

4. You need a plan.

3. You need someone to hold you accountible. They must be able to tell you that you are messing up. They must not be afraid to hurt your feelings. You must listen to them.

2. I must educate myself as I am educating my kids. Throw away what doesn’t work. Don’t be afraid to be wrong and admit it.

1. I have been wrong before and I admit it.

  1. Thank you, this was truly insightful. :) So how do you stay on task?

  2. I agree with every point here. I feel EXACTLY the same way. My respect for teachers has gone up tremendously since homeschooling!

  3. I have a hard time staying on task. There are many things that keep me off task. Mostly disciplining the children, making meals, cleaning and laundry…. and nursing the baby. But every year I get a little better.

  4. Well, Jimmy and I think your children are brilliant and super creative. :) So there’s the proof you are doing a wonderful job. Love, Jen
